Social Responsibility

For the Telecom Italia Media Group, sustainability is a corporate value as well as a tool for planning, management and assessment.

In keeping with Telecom Italia Group policy, Telecom Italia Media is committed to implementing corporate responsibility policies aimed at meeting the needs of all stakeholders, especially in light of its commitment to promoting and implementing the 10 basic principles of the UN Global Compact for the protection of human rights, work standards and the environment and to fighting corruption.

The sustainability management system is based on the main international standards, and most especially:

  • the principles of the Global Compact;
  • the Global Report Iniziative (GRI) standard;
  • the principles of the International Labour Organization (ILO) with regard to respect for workers' rights;
  • the Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000) standard, aimed at encouraging suppliers and subcontractors to respect workers' rights especially with regard to the work environment;
  • the London Benchmarking Group (LBG) model for quantifying investments in the Community;
  • the ISO 14000 environmental management system for television broadcasting.

The Strategic Plan for Sustainability is geared towards the improvement of performances in the area of Sustainability through the definition of Guidelines, Objectives and Actions for the short/medium term. It is updated on an annual basis.

Governance is carried out through the Sustainability Report made up of 315 Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and the Sustainability Plan that monitors and coordinates 363 projects.

Telecom Italia Media Consolidated Annual and First Half Reports contain a Sustainability Section that is organised based on each Stakeholder.

This section is drawn up in accordance with the principles of the Global Compact.

The symbol in the margin indicates the most significant chapters and paragraphs.

In 2004, the Telecom Italia Media Group implemented processes and launched initiatives aimed at improving performance in terms of sustainability as well as the communication of the results achieved. In particular:

  • signed the ten principles of the “Global Compact”, the international initiative announced in 1999 by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan during the World Economic Forum held at Davos and launched in 2000 as an appeal to companies, work and civil organizations, to pursue voluntary initiatives of social and environmental responsibility within their structures and towards the worldwide Community.

  • launched the Control & Risk Self Assessment (CRSA) project aimed at allowing the Group to identify, assess and systematically manage operating risks, especially with a view to adopting national and international best practices (the Preda Code, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act);

  • launched the process for the ISO 14000 environmental management certification of the Television Business Unit;

  • revised, adjusted and fine-tuned the qualitative and quantitative Sustainability indicators introduced in 2003 as part of the reporting system developed at the Telecom Italia Group level and based on an approach involving multi-stakeholder analysis and a set of performance indicators grounded on the principles of the Global Compact and the GRI guidelines;

  • was included in the Ethibel Investment Register that is used as a point of reference for the Socially Responsible Investments (SRIs) increasingly made by a growing number of European banking and financial institutions; inclusion in the register is based on an independent assessment of performance in terms of sustainable development and the involvement of stakeholders.
